Description

Beyth et al developed the Outpatient Bleeding Risk index to identify the risk of major bleeding in an outpatient treated with warfarin. This can help identify a patient who may require closer monitoring and tighter control on anticoagulant dosing. The authors are from Case Western Reserve University.

Parameters:

(1) age of the patient in years

(2) history of stroke

(3) history of gastrointestinal bleeding

(4) number of comorbid conditions

Comorbid conditions included:

(1) recent myocardial infarction

(2) anemia, with hematocrit < 30%

(3) renal impairment (serum creatinine > 1.5 mg/dL)

(4) diabetes mellitus

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 4

• The higher the score the greater the risk of major bleeding.
