The temperature reading from a thermometer may need to be corrected if a portion of the thermometer is in a heated area and the remainder is outside of the instrument or apparatus at room temperature.
Parameters:
(1) room or outside temperature in °C
(2) thermometer reading in °C
(3) highest temperature scale level (°C) on the portion of the thermometer within the heated environment
temperature stem correction in °C =
= 0.000154 * ((thermometer reading) - (highest scale reading within heated environment)) * ((thermometer reading) - (room or outside temperature))
where:
• 0.000154 is the coefficient for the expansion of mercury within the thermometer. A different constant is required if a nonmercury thermometer is used.
actual temperature in °C =
= (temperature reading in °C) + (temperature stem correction in °C)
