Description

The presence of a high hematocrit and/or high platelet count may be associated with increased thrombosis relative to patients with lower counts.

Patient selection - one or both of the following (Warny et al):

(1) erythrocytosis: hematocrit > 45 percent for female; > 48% for male

(2) platelet count > 398,000 per microliter

In the study of Warny et al the risk was for arterial thrombosis.

In the study of Braekkan et al venous thrombosis was associated with high hematocrits.

Evaluation of the patient:

(1) rule out a primary myeloproliferative disorder

(2) identify any causes for secondary erythrocytosis or thrombocytosis

(3) look for other risk factors that may increase the risk of thrombosis
