Some patients with immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP may develop venous or arterial thrombosis. The presence of both thrombocytopenia and thrombosis is seen in other immune conditions such as heparin-induced thrombocytopenia and COVID-19.
Patient selection: immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP)
Features:
(1) presence of ITP with significant thrombocytopenia
(2) variable presence of clinical bleeding
(3) venous or arterial thrombosis
Risk factors for thrombosis in a patient with ITP:
(1) certain therapies such as thrombopoietin-receptor agonists, IVIg, or corticosteroids
(2) history of cancer
(3) history of thrombosis
(4) older age
(5) splenectomy
(6) antiphospholipid antibodies
(7) history of cardiovascular disease
