Tianeptine is a tricyclic antidepressant which may cause dependence and be associated with abuse.
Tianeptine has been found to be a mu-opioid agonist.
Use is associated with a sense of euphoria. With time dependence and tolerance develop.
Symptoms of overdose:
(1) respiratory depression
(2) sedation/lethargy or agitation
(3) miosis or mydriasis
(4) tachycardia or cardiac arrhythmias
(5) psychosis
Symptoms of withdrawal (opiate-like):
(1) nausea
(2) chills
(3) fatigue
(4) myalgia
(5) excitability and agitation
(6) tremor
(7) mood lability
(8) insomnia
(9) rhinorrhea
(10) diarrhea
(11) cravings
(12) anxiety
Naloxone can be useful in acute intoxication. Benzodiazepines have been used for both acute intoxication and withdrawal.
