The Uniform Tire Quality Grading (UTQG) standards specify grading of a tire for treadwear, traction and temperature. The temperature grade reflects the tire's ability to resist the heat generated by friction. It indicates the maximum speed at which the tire can safely operate.
Maximum Speed Range
Temperature Grade
85 to 100 mph
C
100 to 115
B
> 115
A
Temperature Grade
Testing
C
fails 500 rpm test stage
B
successfully completes the 500 rpm test stage but fails 575 rpm
A
successfully completes the 575 rpm test stage
Failure at test stage:
(1) separation
(2) chunking
(3) broken cords
(4) cracking
(5) open splices
A tire may overheat and fail if:
(1) the tire is underinflated.
(2) the tire is overloaded.
(3) the vehicle is traveling at an excessive speed.
