Description

Poss et al evaluated patients prior to total joint arthroplasty and identified potential sources of bacteria that could seed the prosthesis. Correction of these foci prior to surgery can help reduce the risk of prosthetic infection. The authors are from Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

Intervention

urinary tract infection or asymptomatic bacteriuria

treat with antibiotics until sterile

benign prostatic hypertrophy

reduce size of prostate or TURP

skin breakdown associated with rheumatoid arthritis

interventions to heal skin lesions and prevent new sites

decubitus ulcer

interventions to resolve and care to prevent new lesions

poor dental hygiene (dental caries and/or gingivitis)

dental care and cleaning until resolved

abscess or other focus of suppurative infection

drainage with antibiotics

acute bacterial infection

delay surgery until recovered
