Transient Erythroblastopenia of Childhood (TEC) is a cause of transient anemia in young children.
Clinical and laboratory features:
(1) young child (often 3-4 years old)
(2) usually immunocompetent
(3) anemia
(4) reticulocytopenia
(5) decreased erythroblasts on bone marrow exam
(6) benign course
(7) exclusion of other conditions
(8) variable presence of leukopenia and/or thrombocytopenia
TEC has been associated with a variety of viruses with no one agent implicated in all cases:
(1) parvovirus B19
(2) echovirus 11
(3) human herpesvirus type 6 (HHV-6)
(4) Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)
(5) others
