Trichomonas species can rarely infect the central nervous system.
Types of infection:
(1) brain abscess
(2) meningitis
(3) meningoencephalitis
The infection may be mixed with bacteria.
The diagnosis may be suspected by identifying the protozoa in a clinical specimen (CSF, other) and confirmed by PCR.
Risk factors for CNS infection:
(1) preterm infant
(2) untreated maternal infection during pregnancy
(3) immunosuppression/immunodeficiency
