A truck may be classified based on its gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), which is the maximum weight with cargo, fuel and passengers.

Class 2 may be divided into Class 2A or 2B:
(1) Class 2A is <= 8,500 lbs (down to 6,001)
(2) Class 2B is > 8,500 lbs (up to 10,000)
Trucks may also be separated based on duty (light, medium heavy).

A commercial driver's license (CDL) is required to drive a heavy duty truck. Truck trailers are considered heavy duty trucks.
