Maufus et al reported ultrasound criteria for recurrent deep vein thrombosis (DVT). The authors are from multiple institutions in France.
Examination: compression ultrasonography
Requirement: previous compression ultrasonography exam for comparison
Criteria for deep vein thrombosis:
(1) new non-compressible vein (non-compressibility of a previously compressible venous segment)
(2) an increase in the diameter of a previously thrombosed vein by > 4 mm
No change in a previously thrombosed vein or an increase < 2 mm rules out recurrent DVT.
An increase from 2-4 mm is equivocal for recurrence.
Criteria based on echogenicity or Doppler blood flow were not reproducible.
