Vasitis nodosa is a benign, reactive nodularity of the vas deferens that must be differentiated from tumor. It is viewed as the male analogue of salpingitis isthmica nodosa (SIN) in the female.
Features:
(1) one or more fusiform nodules along the vas
(2) histologic exam shows a benign tubular proliferation of ductular epithelium with stroma and inflammation insinuating into the muscularis and adventitia
(3) may be accompanied by sperm and/or suture granulomata
Risk factors:
(1) following vasectomy
(2) following other surgical procedures such as herniorrhaphy
(3) following trauma, including torture
(4) following chronic urogenital infection (chronic cystitis, etc)
Differential diagnosis:
(1) tumor involving the vas
(2) infection involving the vas
