Description

Dengue Shock Syndrome (DSS) is the occurrence of circulatory failure and shock in a patient with Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever. Failure to recognize and properly treat the patients during this phase is associated with significant mortality, while early and aggressive therapy can be life-saving. Certain clinical findings may help identify the patients at risk for the shock syndrome.


 

Warning signs of impending shock:

(1) intense, sustained abdominal pain

(2) change from fever to hypothermia, with sweating and prostration

(3) persistent vomiting

(4) restlessness or lethargy

 

Indications for hospital admission and therapy to prevent shock:

(1) any of the 4 warning signs

(2) any suggestion of hypotension
