Description

Gilworth et al reported various levels that can be used to identify work instability (WI) in a patient with rheumatoid arthritis or other condition associated with disability. The authors are from the University of Leeds, Royal Victoria Infirmary (Newcastle) and other institutions in the United Kingdom.

Work instability (WI) involves all of the following:

(1) a worker with some form of impairment

(2) a mismatch between a worker’s functional capabilities and job demands

(3) a need to change jobs or make work adjustments as a result.

The magnitude of the work instability can be graded (“levels”) based on the magnitude of problems at work..

Problems at Work

WI Level

none

0

2

some of work unsuitable for worker but rest can be handled with modified work practices and/or use of alternative equipment

3
