To evaluate a child for streptococcal pharyngitis using the World Health Organization (WHO) clinical decision rule using clinical findings alone.
Patient selection: complaint of sore throat, age 2 months to 5 years
Criteria for streptococcal pharyngitis:
(1) white pharyngeal exudate
(2) enlarged, tender cervical lymph nodes
Performance:
• The rule is specific (94%) but not sensitive (16%).
