Leprosy can infect a number of animals in addition to humans. Contact with these animals can result in human infection.
Leprosy may occur in the:
(1) nine-banded armadillo
(2) chimpanzee
(3) "sooty" mangabey monkey
When to suspect zoonotic leprosy:
(1) close contact with an animal harboring M. leprae
(2) unexplained neuropathy or skin lesion
(3) no evidence of contact with a human case of leprosy
